Multiply before adding

Do the multiplication

$4 \times 2 = 8$.

Now add

Add the $3$ to get $11$.

Always work out what is inside the brackets before anything else.

Work out the bracket

$3+4 = 7$.

Now multiply

Multiply the bracket value by $2$ to get $14$.

Work out the bracket before dividing.

Rewrite the calculation

Now it is $12$ divided by $4$.

Divide

$12 \div 4 = 3$.

Powers before adding

Indices (powers) come before addition, so square the $2$ first.

Work out the power

$2² = 2 \times 2 = 4$.

Now add

Add the $5$ to get $9$.

Powers before adding

Work out both squares before adding them.

Work them out

$2^{2}=4$ and $3^{2}=9$.

Now add

$4+9 = 13$.
